Lime plastering in Devon
Breathable lime plaster for period, cob and solid-walled homes: the traditional way, and still the right way, for older buildings.
Why lime?
Before modern gypsum and cement, almost every wall in Devon was finished in lime. Old solid walls were built to take on a little moisture and let it out again; lime works with that, staying breathable and slightly flexible. Seal those same walls in with modern plaster and paint and the moisture has nowhere to go, which is a common cause of damp patches, flaking paint and mould in older homes.
Where we use it
- Cob, stone and solid-brick homes
- Repairs to existing lime plaster, so old and new work together
- Replacing modern plaster that's trapping damp in an older wall
- Combined with cork for extra warmth on cold walls
What to expect
Lime is applied in several coats and cures more slowly than modern plaster, so it takes a little longer. The finish is soft, natural and very durable. Decorate with a breathable paint, such as limewash or a mineral or clay paint, to keep the benefit.
Common questions
Is lime plaster good for damp walls?
In older solid-walled homes, yes: it lets moisture escape rather than trapping it. Damp has to be tackled at its cause too, and we'll look for that when we visit.
Can I paint lime plaster with normal emulsion?
It's best not to. Standard emulsions seal the surface. Use limewash or a breathable mineral or clay paint.
Does lime plaster take longer?
A little. It goes on in coats and needs time to cure between them, but the result lasts for generations.
