Rendering in Devon
Exterior render that protects your walls from Devon weather and looks good for years: traditional lime render, sand and cement, and spray cork.
Render that keeps the weather out and lets the walls breathe
Render is your home's raincoat. Done well, it sheds driving rain, protects the masonry underneath and gives the house a clean, finished look. Done badly, or with the wrong material, it cracks, lets water in behind it and traps it there. In Devon, with wind-driven rain off the moors and the coast, getting it right matters.
What we offer
- Traditional render for houses, extensions, garden walls and outbuildings
- Lime render for older stone, cob and solid-walled properties, so moisture can still escape
- Spray cork render, our flagship: a breathable, insulating, weather-resistant finish
- Render repairs: hollow, cracked or blown patches cut out and made good
- Re-rendering: hacking off failed render and starting again with the right system
Choosing the right render
Most problems we're asked to fix come from the wrong render on the wrong wall. Hard cement render on an old stone or cob house can hold damp in the wall, which then shows up as damp patches and mould inside. Older buildings usually do far better with lime or cork, which let moisture move out. Modern block-built homes are less fussy, and a traditional render system is often ideal.
We'll look at the building, any existing render and any damp problems, then recommend what will last rather than what's quickest.
How a rendering job runs
- Free survey and quote, including what's causing any existing cracks or damp.
- Access and protection: scaffold or towers where needed, with windows, paths and plants covered.
- Preparation: failed render removed, walls cleaned, beads and mesh fixed where needed.
- Application in coats, with time to cure between them.
- Finishing and clean-up, leaving the site as we found it.
Common questions
Can you render in winter?
Render needs to cure without frost, so we plan exterior work around the weather and won't apply it when a hard frost is forecast. Spring to autumn is the main season, but milder spells work too.
My render is cracked. Does it all need replacing?
Not always. Small areas can often be cut out and patched. If large areas sound hollow when tapped, or water is getting behind it, re-rendering is usually the better value in the long run.
Which render is best for an old stone or cob house?
A breathable one: lime or cork. Cement render can trap moisture in old walls. We'll explain the options when we visit.
Can render be painted?
Yes. Use a breathable masonry paint (especially on lime or cork) once the render has fully cured. Some finishes are self-coloured and don't need painting at all.
Do you give free quotes?
Yes. Surveys and quotes are free, with no obligation.
