Plastering in Devon
Walls and ceilings plastered properly: smooth, flat and ready to decorate. Traditional skills from a father-and-son team based near Dartmoor.
Plastering done the right way for the building
Good plastering is the part of a job you notice every day afterwards. Walls should be flat, corners crisp and the finish smooth enough to paint straight onto once it has dried. That's what we aim for in every room, whether it's a quick re-skim or stripping a wall back and starting again.
Devon has a real mix of homes, from cob and granite cottages to Victorian terraces and modern estates. We look at what your walls are made of before recommending anything, because the right plaster for a 1990s block wall is rarely the right plaster for a 200-year-old solid stone one.
What we do
- Re-skimming walls and ceilings that are cracked, patched or uneven
- Full re-plastering after rewiring, damp work or a renovation
- Ceilings, including boarding and skimming over tired or artexed ceilings
- Patch repairs blended in so you can't see where the old plaster stops
- Lime plaster for older, solid-walled homes that need to breathe (see lime plaster)
- Cork plaster where you want a warmer, quieter wall (see cork plaster)
Modern or traditional?
Gypsum plasters are quick and give a very smooth finish, and they're the right choice for most modern homes. Older houses built with solid walls were designed to let moisture move through them; sealing them in with modern plaster and paint can trap damp and lead to mould. In those homes we usually recommend lime, which stays breathable. If you're not sure what you've got, we'll tell you when we come to look.
How a plastering job runs
- Free visit and quote. We look at the walls, talk through what you want and give you a clear written price.
- Protection. Floors, furniture and doorways are sheeted off before we start, and we keep the dust contained.
- Preparation. Loose plaster comes off, cracks are taped, and surfaces are primed or bonded so the new coat grips.
- Plastering. Applied, flattened and polished to a smooth finish.
- Tidy up. We clear away and leave the room ready to dry out, with advice on when and how to decorate.
Common questions
How long does fresh plaster take to dry?
It depends on the plaster, the thickness and the weather. A skim coat in a warm, ventilated room is often dry enough to mist-coat within about a week; lime and thicker coats take longer. We'll tell you what to expect for your job.
Can you plaster over old plaster?
Often, yes. If the existing plaster is sound we can bond and skim over it. If it's loose, blown or damp it needs to come off first, and we'll show you why.
Do you plaster ceilings?
Yes. We skim ceilings, and can overboard old, cracked or artexed ceilings before skimming them.
Do I need to empty the room?
It helps if you can move small items and anything fragile. We sheet and protect everything that stays.
Do you give free quotes?
Yes. Quotes and advice are free and there's no obligation.
